The False Promise of Prescriptive Lifestyle Advice

What is a healthy lifestyle?

We often hear about the dos and don’ts about a good lifestyle.

It may include drinking eight glasses of water, sleeping eight hours, and walking ten thousand steps every day.

To add more to the bucket list, we have thirty minutes of meditation, writing a gratitude journal, spending quality time with family members, having a close circle of friends, having a creative hobby, eating the right food, and so on. This list is only illustrative, but not exhaustive.

The don’ts of a healthy lifestyle include smoking, drinking, excess screen time, etc.

Diet and nutrition attract a lot of prescriptive advice, ignoring the diversity of food and eating habits.

These are all good things to do, no doubt.

The thing is, people have lived long, happy, and healthy lives without doing most of the above things or doing the discouraged activities.

Heavy smokers and drinkers have lived into their eighties, while teetotallers have died in their fifties and sixties.
